Any structure that falls victim to neglect is often left as a stark reminder of the economic hardships of the area. October 8, 2009. A woman waits in line, on March 20, 2009, for a clothing give-away sponsored by the Oliver Foundation in the Red Location Township, South Africa. Recipients are called by name and are required to provide an identification card. This method of selection is an attempt at deterring residents from visiting local predatory loan sharks who often hold identification cards as collateral. People lined up on March 20, 2009 outside of a clothing give-away at the Red Location township in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. This is a pre school located in the Missionvale Township near Port Elizabeth, South Africa. August 25, 2009. Ten cents, pictured here on October 2, 2009, is one of many children who have little access to nutritious food. Most kids in the Red Location Township are susceptible to malnutrition, which affect their school attendance. In an effort to combat the situation nearby schools offer one meal a day for school kids who attend class. Ten cents received his name due to his persistent asking for ten cents (Rand), the equivalent of one US penny, from elders. As many as a hundred kids ranging in age attend this day care center on a daily basis, located in the heart of the Red Location Township, where one meal of porridge and a small piece of meat is provided. For most of these kids it is the only meal they'll have all day. March 18, 2009. Mam Mgadi, a former freedom fighter for the ANC, is one of a handful of community leaders in the Red Location Township. Long retired, she now organizes a soup kitchen near her home as well as aids non-government organizations in their effort to provide basic needs for residents. May 27, 2009. Some people in the Red Location Township seek food from soup kitchens that some of their neighbors organize with the help of outside contributions. This one is organized by Mam Gadi, seen in the background serving food, and held two-three times a week depending on the amount of donations received. March 18, 2009. Food donations often consist of spoiled or expired food from small restaurants or supermarkets. Here, a mixture of half-rotten vegetables, fruits and stale bread is delivered to a local soup kitchen in the Red Location; South Africa., July 24, 2009. With the help of the Missionvale center, a multi-purpose facility founded by Sister Ethel Normoyle, some residents of the Missionvale Township are getting access to self-improving skills. However, some in the area note that only a fraction of residents have access to the center and has had very little effect on the overall conditions of the community. His client, Gannet, suffers from a rare genetic condition called Mowat-Wilson syndrome which is caused by a mutation or absence of a particular gene. In Gannet's case, he is also missing parts of the corpus callosum, the structure connecting the left and right hemispheres of his brain. In 2006, a documentary was made about Gannet's case entitled, "Key of G". Alex used to feel anixuous when he first started walking with Gannet in public. The stares and whispers of on-lookers angered alex and prompted him to become defensive. Over time, he has become more at ease and less critical of those ingnorant to Gannet's condition. He doesn't feel Gannet would want him to be so overly protective. One of the major challenges for Alex is trying to keep Gannet from becoming uncooperative. Gannet can become easily frustrated and will begin to hit or bite himself. it could take hours to clam him down. Alex says that 2008 will be his last year with Gannet.
